SSL CERTIFICATES

What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral.

The website’s URL protocol will change from HTTP to HTTPS. Currently, a security padlock will also be present in the URL as a way to further signal the status of the website’s Google SSL certificate.

SSL certificates help the web cut down on instances of cybercrime that are often performed through security loopholes in web browsers.

If the connection between the surfer’s web browser and web server are not secure through an SSL connection, a moderately skilled hacker could seize information, such as credit card numbers, as it is being typed into a form on an unsecured website.

Do I need an SSL Certificate?
Getting someone to trust in a product is one thing, but how can you get visitors to trust in your website? The answer is your SSL certificate.

Having one allows you to process credit card and other personal info safely and securely such as login and contact form details. It also allows you to become PCI compliant, which is also a must for online business.

What does it do?

  • Establishes Trust and Builds Brand Power
  • Provides Encryption of Sensitive Information
  • Provides Authentication

Do I Already Have One?
If you are not sure if you are already using an SSL certificate on your website, there is an easy way to check.

Visit your website and look at the top left of your address bar, next to your domain name:

What does Google think?
Google does not necessarily admit that non-HTTPS encrypted sites are at a handicap in its infamous search algorithm, Though it is relatively safe to assume that a security warning on a website could lead to drastic fallout.

For example, it could decrease the time consumers spend on the site, the bounce rate, and eventually, the click rate on the SERPs (Searh Engine Ranked Pages). All of these factors would contribute to decreased search engine rankings.

“Google is not only the largest search directory in the world, but they also have the most used web browser online.”

When should I get one?
Technically, you can start a blog or a website and not need one right away. In fact, you can even have a website and run purchases exclusively through PayPal without an SSL certificate, However PCI compliance requires that you have an SSL certificate.

In the long run, we would recommend that if you do not have one, now is the time to get started. A big miss understanding some online business owners have is they think it’s only for websites selling products online, this is NOT the case.

Any business should now be set up with an SSL certificate. If not, you’re telling potential customers that if they’d like to submit their personal and/or credit card information they will need to go somewhere else.
